Kids Love Those Cartoons!
by Jeff Rottman
January 1998Sometimes its hard to separate your kids from their comic books or a favorite animated TV show, and the same thing could happen once your children have a look at the Warner Brothers Kid's site, and its branch, the WB Animation site! The site can be found at Warner Brothers.com The pages are rich in detailed cartoon images with animated extras - all your favorite Warner cartoon characters are there! The main page uses inviting, colorful images, links to 5 other areas. One of the first pages to try is the Warner Bros. Animation page, it's like a site by itself, as it has several branches with many games enhanced for Shockwave enabled browsers, or for Windows or Macs. They also take you to a page which describes the latest Warner kids TV shows and their schedules.
One part of the site is Animation 101. It teaches kids about how cartoons are put together. These terrific pages are filled with great looking graphics, photos, and scenes from cartoons themselves. They ask the question "How does an animated project get from a writer's brain to the screen?" Checking the linked pages the kids will find out how voice artists, sound effects, and moving pictures all combine to create what we know as animation.
The Animation 101 class has many photos, examples of work in progress, a video clip of a voice animator at work, and a small assortment of sound effects you can listen to. Its' an excellent way to learn the basics about professional animation!
One last part of the site that could be overlooked is a link to look at and download a special Tune Squad poster characters and kids. They say One of the best things about the Tune Squad is that every character is unique - from Bugs Bunny and Sylvester to Lola Bunny and the Tasmanian Devil, everyone has a distinct personality. This poster celebrates our differences and shows how they make for a stronger team - and when it comes down to it, we're all on the same squad!
When you've sampled enough of the wacky world of Warner Brothers, check out another fun site, called Mr. Bill's World, This site also links to several other nice locations, but the heavy graphics do cause slow loading! The site proudly says it's a "Family Friendly CDF Channel" and it is loaded with lots of links. The hypertext links on the page take you to sites produced by Bill Earles, a teacher, consultant, and freelance writer who lives in St. Helens, Oregon, USA.
In his own words he says "There's something on these pages for everyone. I planned it that way. If you see something you like, let me know. If there is something you would like to see, let me know that too. By the way, these pages aren't half bad. A lot of work went into them, and they're produced from the heart. To date, people from 78 different countries have checked in, representing all 7 continents and all walks of life".
The links cover a wide area, from Sports, to learning the language of the web-HTML, to Education, Friends and Family, to an article about the top 20 reason why dogs don't use Computers! Mr. Bill will also deliver his offbeat information and fun to you if you have Pointcast Network installed on your computer and browser. Other links include a section on Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger's Place and Just-4-Kids.
Keep checking here often for more fun looks at great kid and family sites on the ever-expanding Kid's Domain!
