Child Safety on the Web

by Anise Hollingshead
January 1998

Here is something new for those of us who are concerned about internet safety for our children: APTE is putting the finishing touch on Internet Coach for Net Safety, which will address the issues of safety on the net and give solutions. There are two programs on the same CD-ROM: an adult program with advice and safety resources, and a children's program which is a game illustrating Net Safety. The player will sign a pledge that the parent/teacher can keep near the computer.

A popular program for limiting kids' access to the internet, Cyber Patrol, is being offered for the first time in retail stores, scheduled for release January 1998. This version, 4.0 has added a new feature to their chat guard, safe chat, which limits chat to areas either moderated by automated tools, or areas which are overseen by full-time moderators. Street price will be around $39.95

Packard Bell is bundling a new kid friendly browser with their PC systems now on sale. Based on Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Kiddonet comes with preinstalled access to the Kiddonet web site, which contains interactive activities for kids. This browser is aimed for kids ages 4-8, and is simple to use, with big and colorful buttons. The parent can set up their own list of sites in the "My Favorite" category.

InfoQuest 2000 has developed a new children's software CD ROM to help teach kids about personal safety, called Super-Safe Kids Club. This game shows kids how to recognize actions or words that may be harmful. Founded by Marquez, the CD ROM was developed by a team of child safety experts, teachers, and others to make a game that would help children retain what they learned. The lessons learned are reinforced by 6 sing-along songs about safety. Nothing can replace a parent's protection, but for those inevitable times a child is away from their parent, anything that helps the child remember the safety rules is good. Affordably priced at $29.95.
