PURPOSE OF STAFFROOM

Written by Kai Hakkarainen.

The purpose of the Skills module is to facilitate constructive search of information and active building of knowledge in the context of virtual library environments. Towards this end the staffroom is designed to provide information about certain critical aspects of young children's knowledge-seeking process and, thereby, help librarians, teachers, and parents to scaffold productive search, processing, use and management of knowledge by the children. Psychological knowledge concerning children's knowledge-seeking process is not only needed for understanding how children approach information search but also for facilitating development of his or her skills of knowledge-acquisition. Through staffroom also a child may obtain metaknowledge concerning his or her own process of knowledge seeking, i.e., adopt and become aware about effective methods and strategies of knowledge-seeking.

The staffroom provides information about
basic information skills that refer to library-related skills of systematically searching and organizing information, and advanced information skills that refer to skills needed for carrying out a successful study project.
