| South of the arctic tundra stretches a broad band of evergreen coniferous forest (the boreal, or northern, forests). The leaves of these trees are needle-shaped and resinous to resist the cold. The trees grow all year round and conditions produce acidic soils, with organic matter leached downward as water percolates through.
