| Deciduous forests occur in more temperate latitudes, with a summer growing season and a winter rest. The leaves of deciduous trees are broad to collect sunlight in the summer, and are shed in the autumn. A rich humus builds up in the soil in the drier, warmer conditions. Most of the original forest in Europe has been cleared to make way for agriculture.
