Situated 40 km (25 miles) south of the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos
Islands is a group of 30 low-lying islands, eight of which are inhabited.
A traditional salt-based economy was exhausted in 1964, leading to two
decades of stagnation. Since the 1980s, however, tourism and offshore
banking have led a dramatic turnaround in the islands' fortunes.
