Named because of its position between California and Japan, Midway
is a coral atoll at the western end of the Hawaiian islands; there have
been moves to make it part of Hawaii. The site of a major World War
II battle, the atoll comprises two large islands, totaling over 4 sq
km (1.5 sq miles), and several smaller ones. It functions as a naval
air base and wildlife refuge. The population is limited to military
personnel and civilian contractors, but some tourism is permitted, mainly
connected with the wildlife.
