DESCRIPTION

The mountainous, volcanic island of Jan Mayen lies 900 km (558 miles) northwest of Norway, in the Arctic Ocean. The island's only resource is its rich fishing grounds. These were the subject of a long dispute with Greenland over fishing rights and possibly also oil and gas deposits. The International Court of Justice helped the two parties reach a compromise in 1993.
