DESCRIPTION

The South Atlantic island of South Georgia, briefly occupied by Argentine forces during the Falklands War, has a small UK garrison at Grytviken and a British Antarctic Survey base. The volcanic South Sandwich Islands, 750 km (465 miles) to the southeast, are uninhabited. The territory is increasingly visited by ecotourists, attracted by the abundant wildlife.
