Guadeloupe lies at the southern end of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean
and includes the north of St. Martin island and St. Barthélémy
island near Anguilla. The movement for independence from France has
been pronounced and intermittently violent since the 1960s. The economy
is largely based on agriculture and tourism, with sugar, rum, and bananas
the main exports, but the islands are dependent on French and EU regional
aid. The vulnerability of the banana industry to hurricanes and global
trade pacts has prompted efforts to expand sugar production and develop
tourism.
