DESCRIPTION

A volcanic, ice-covered island in the South Atlantic Ocean, Bouvet lies 1,600 km (992 miles) north of Antarctica. Because it lies north of the Antarctic Circle, it is not covered by the Antarctic Treaty. A royal decree, issued in 1971, made the whole island a nature reserve. Bouvet Island regularly plays host to scientific expeditions from Norway.
