The large volcanic island of Réunion, 800 km (500 miles) east
of Madagascar, provides France with an important strategic presence
– and a large military base – in the Indian Ocean. Its mountainous
interior has forced the majority of the population to live along the
coast. Tensions still exist between the very poor black community and
the wealthy Indian and European groups, although the violence of 1991
has not been repeated. Unemployment is high and the cost of living very
expensive. Réunion's main crop is sugarcane, although Cyclone
Dina devastated production in 2002.
