DESCRIPTION

The British Indian Ocean Territory, or Chagos Islands, lies in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The coral atolls are uninhabited, except for the US–UK military base on Diego Garcia, and the UK has undertaken to cede the islands to Mauritius when they are no longer required. In 2000 the Ilois people, evicted by the UK from the islands in 1968, won the right in the UK High Court to return, but face strong resistance from the USA.
