DESCRIPTION

So named because it was sighted on Christmas Day in 1643, Christmas Island lies in the Indian Ocean, 380 km (240 miles) south of Java. The population is mostly Malay and Chinese, descended from laborers imported to mine rich phosphate deposits. A national park covers some 70% of the island. In 2001 the Australian government agreed with Russia to begin construction of a rocket-launching site on the island.
