So named because it was sighted on Christmas Day in 1643, Christmas
Island lies in the Indian Ocean, 380 km (240 miles) south of Java. The
population is mostly Malay and Chinese, descended from laborers imported
to mine rich phosphate deposits. A national park covers some 70% of
the island. In 2001 the Australian government agreed with Russia to
begin construction of a rocket-launching site on the island.
