DESCRIPTION

The uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands lie 2,600 km (1,614 miles) southwest of Hawaii, in the Pacific Ocean. The USA's interest in the two coral islands centered on rich guano deposits, which were worked out by 1891. The islands were again inhabited from 1936 until 1942, becoming a stop for trans-Pacific flights. They are now a refuge for over a million birds.
