Real World Navigation Family of Tools

The Real World Navigation Design Series contains the tools that allow you to create your own panoramas from photographic or computer generated imagery. Each of the tools included in this package is described below:

*Real World Navigation 3D Seamer

About the Real World Navigation 3D Seamer...

Real World Navigation 3D Seamer
  • What is it?
The Real World Navigation Seamer allows developers with computer modeled scenes to generate SmoothMove Panoramas. With the 3D Seamer, developers can create panoramic imagery from existing models, using nearly any rendering package.
  • How does it work?
The SmoothMove Panorama requires six CG images, each one corresponding to the sides of a cube: top, bottom, left, right, front, and back. These images are imported into the SmoothMove 3D Seamer to create the panorama. By clicking on any one of the buttons, the developer imports the bit-map corresponding to that side of the panorama. The images are seamed with a click on the "Seam" command. Once the panorama is created, it appears in the lower-half of the window.

*Real World Navigation Photo Seamer

About the Real World Navigation Photo Seamer...

Real World Navigation Photo Seamer
  • What is it?
The Real World Navigation Seamer (Photo Seamer) generates panoramic spheres from photographs taken with an 8mm fisheye lens. The Photo Seamer will seam together three fisheye images into one seamless panoramic image, correcting for minor alignment problems present at capture time.
  • How does it work?
For each panorama, the developer takes three photos with a 180░ fisheye lens, each 120░ apart from each other. Photographs are then scanned and saved as .bmp files. The panorama generation process is done by the Photo Seamer. Images are loaded into the seamer by clicking on the "Load Image" buttons. Subsequently, the center of each image needs to be determined in order for the seaming process to begin. Once that is done, click on the "Auto Seam" button to generate the real space panorama.

*Real World Navigation Viewer

About the Real World Navigation Viewer...

Real World Navigation Viewer
  • What is it?
The Real World Navigation Viewer is a stand-alone program which plays SmoothMove Panoramas. The viewer features 360░ viewing field with full vertical tilt. The developer navigates the panorama with the mouse by holding the left button. To reset the panorama to its original position, click on the right button and select "Reset Panorama".
  • What are the benefits?
The viewer is a tool that allows for the navigation of the panorama. It also recognizes and plays hotspots with the click of the mouse button. As you can see on the left, a computer-generated chopper was added to the real-space panorama of the Pittock Mansion, located in Portland, Oregon. In the viewer, any hotspot can be multiplied and moved to a different location as well.

*Real World Navigation Hotspot Editor

About the Real World Navigation Hotspot Editor...

Real World Navigation Hotspot Editor
  • What is it?
The Hotspot Editor allows for the creation of hotspots. Hotspots represent associations of image regions with actions. They make the SmoothMove Panorama interactive.
  • What are the benefits?
By using hotspots, developers can define user-initiated audio or video clips, application launching, World Wide Web sites, etc. In the Hotspot Editor the user can create, test, and edit as many hotspots as desired. Panoramas are then saved in order for the hotspots to be recognizable in the Real World Navigation Viewer.
