Keep file associations from changing.
When you double-click a file icon, an associated application starts and loads the file. Sometimes when you install a new application, it re-writes this information, creating a new association between itself and a known file type. This can result in a tug-of-war process in which you are never quite sure what application is going to start when you double-click an icon.
File Extension
To protect or unprotect a file type association:
- Make sure the application you want to use is associated with the file type.
- Make sure Norton Registry Tracker is running.
- Click the File Extension list box.
A list of file extensions appears. - Select a file extension.
- Click Protect or Unprotect.
Norton Registry Tracker must be running for this procedure to work.
To start Norton Registry Tracker with Windows:
- Click here to start Norton Registry Tracker.
- From the Options menu, select Settings.
- Click Start automatically.
- Click OK.
