Common Problems

How can I disable AOL Instant Messenger?

To avoid receiving AOL Instant Messenger Registration or Sign On prompts, click the Setup button on the AIM sign-on screen. Select the Misc tab, then uncheck Start AIM when Windows Starts.

Why can't I alphabetize my bookmarks?

There is no automatic alphabetization for bookmarks. To rearrange the bookmarks by hand, go to Bookmarks and choose Edit Bookmarks. Then go to the View menu and choose By Name. You can now rearrange by dragging any bookmark, folder, or separator. You can also set up folders within your bookmarks by opening the File menu and choosing New Folder.

How can I clear the Location (Netsite) drop-down list of web sites (Windows only)?

When you type a URL in the Location (Netsite) field, the name of the corresponding page is added to a drop-down list below the field. To see this list, click the arrow at the right end of the field.

To clear this list:

  1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Navigator category.
  3. Find the Location Bar History at the bottom of the window. Click the Clear Location Bar button.
  4. Click OK.

If you don't want a page to appear on this list, avoid typing the URL in the Location field. Instead, open the File menu and choose Open Page. Then type the URL in the dialog box.

I can't find the Navigator window

If you're not sure you are in Navigator, click the Navigator icon (a ship's steering wheel) in the component bar. You can also choose Navigator from the Communicator menu.

How do I clear the disk cache?

Because the cache holds the contents of all the pages that you have visited during the session, it can get full quickly. You need to clear the cache regularly to increase Navigator performance:

  1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced category and select Cache.
  3. Click the Clear Disk Cache button and the Clear Memory Cache button.
  4. Click OK.

You can use keyboard equivalents for the Back and Forward buttons. Back: press Alt-left arrow (Command-left arrow on Mac OS). Forward: press Alt-right arrow (Command-right arrow on Mac OS).

I'm stuck on a page: the Back button isn't working

Some pages contain code that prevents you from using the Back button. To go back, open the Go menu and select the listing that has a 1 next to it.

Security and Warnings

I forgot my password (somone else set my password)

Your computer has password-protected certificates for your user name. You cannot set a new password unless you know your existing password.

If someone set up your account for you, obtain your password from that person.

If you forget your password

If you forget your password, you cannot access your certificates or decrypt new or saved messages. Your certificate issuer cannot give you a replacement certificate, so you must obtain new certificates.

Suggestions:

Why can't I encrypt a message or add my digital signature?

Why can't I forward a decrypted message?

If you attempt to forward a decrypted message without first encrypting it, Messenger reminds you to encrypt it.

Why can't I decrypt a message or page?

What does Possible Message Tampering mean?

You see warnings about message tampering only when an incoming message has been altered in some way after it was sent. Alteration of the original message content can mean corruption due to mishandling or interception and forgery.

Suggestions:

Return the tampered message to its sender. Tell the sender you are having problems with his or her encrypted or signed messages.

Contact your system administrator or help desk. Report the incident and inquire about established procedures.

What do I do when I see a Java download alert?

A signed Java applet is not downloaded until you approve a security certificate that identifies the sender. Signed JavaScript is also not executed without your approval. You are also asked for approval if the JavaScript or a Java applet appears to compromise security.

The alert allows you to choose one of these options:

Messenger Problems

How do I know when I have new mail?

A green arrow over the Inbox icon on the component bar indicates that you have new mail.

If you are using Windows 95 or later version, you can use a program called Netscape Mail Notification. To activate Netscape Mail Notification:

  1. Click the Start button on Windows, select Programs, then Netscape Communicator, then Utilities.
  2. Select Netscape Mail Notification.

You will now see a letter icon on the right side of your Windows task bar. When new mail arrives, you hear an alert sound, and a check appears on the icon. To customize the options on this feature, right-click on the icon and select Options.

How do I convert from a different mail system (like Eudora or Outlook Express) to Netscape Messenger?

You can convert your mail by using an Import feature in Netscape Messenger:

  1. Open Netscape Messenger.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Import. You will then be guided through the process.

How do I make Netscape start up with a mail window instead of the browser window?

  1. Click the Edit menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Click the Appearance category. Under "On startup, launch," select the component you want to see at startup.

How do I send email without showing a recipient's addresses or name in the header?

Use the bcc (blind carbon copy) field. All email addresses that you put in the bcc field are hidden from recipients you enter in the To and cc fields. You must always put at least one address in the To field for this to work, even if it is your own email address.

The bcc field is accessible through the To pull-down menu.

Why can't I read newsgroups?

The mail and newsgroup server names are probably incorrect. Ask your network administrator or service provider for the correct server names. Otherwise, problems may exist with the newsgroup server.

Why is Messenger asking for my user name and password?

To access your mail server, you may need to enter your user name and password. If you don't know them, review your account information provided by your site or Internet service provider. Account information customarily contains user name and password information, as well as host names and port numbers.

Why do I see the Mail & Newsgroups set-up screen when I open my Inbox or click Get Msg?

If the Mail & Newsgroups set-up screen (Windows and Mac OS only) appears when you try to get mail, you need to set required Mail & Newsgroups preferences. Use the set-up screen to set these preferences or set them manually by opening the Edit menu and choosing Preferences. Then select the Mail & Newsgroups category.

Why can't I get new messages over my Dial-up connection?

Your connection may be down. If you cannot establish a connection: ensure that your PPP and TCP/IP software is configured correctly, and that your ISP account is configured for PPP access. Your ISP representative should be able to help you configure your network software.

Newsgroup Troubles

Before you can display the name of your primary newsgroup server, you must set your Newsgroup Servers preferences. If they are not set, the Mail & Newsgroups set-up window (Windows only), or the Groups Server panel of the Preferences dialog box comes up automatically. Use the Mail & Newsgroups set-up screen or the Newsgroup Servers Preferences panel to set required preferences.

If an invalid newsgroup server name appears for your primary server in the list of servers, provide the correct server name by using the Newsgroup Servers Preferences panel (open the Edit menu and choose Preferences, and then select the Mail & Newsgroups category).

If an invalid newsgroup server name appears for a server that is not your primary server, use the Newsgroup Server Properties dialog box to correct the name of the server.

If you can't access a server using a dial-up connection with autoconnect, check your network software, such as PPP and TCP/IP, and modem settings to see if they're correctly configured to access the server's site. Enable configurations for the server's site, then try opening the server.
