WD97: "Word failed reading from this file... AutoRecovery..." When You Save Document in 6.0/95

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save a Word 6.0/95 document in Word 97, you may receive the following error messages:

Word failed reading from this file (AutoRecovery save of file_name.asd). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry.

-and-

There is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document.

-and-
Word has lost data due to a bad network connection or missing floppy. Documents relying on this data are going to be saved and then closed.

The Word document is then deleted and the text of the document is saved in a file named "Rescued Document.txt" in the folder that contained the original Word document.


RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, obtain Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).
