(pronounced cuhNAWuh) When you bring up the CRW-Eagle Aviation Mode you will be parked behind the Eagle Aviation building at Yeager Airport's General Aviation Facility. There are 3 distinct parts of the airport: The public terminal where the control tower is located, the GA section for private planes and business jets, and the Air National Guard section where the C-130's are based. Here is a suggested tour of the valley. To best view the scenery, keep your altitude in the 1500 to 2000 range. Downtown Charleston is rendered in some detail but many important landmarks were left out due to frame rate considerations. East of downtown you will find the state capitol building which has only recently had its dome regilded after many embarrassing years with yellow paint on it. If you continue following the Kanawha river east you will _eventually_ run across a very interesting landing strip. I'll let it be a surprise... but rest assured it does exist in reality. Going west from downtown following the river you will notice Union Carbide Corporation's Blaine Island chemical plant. The city of South Charleston will be on your left at that point. Further down the river you will see the city of Dunbar on the north side where Interstate 64 crosses the river. Next you will see Union Carbide's Institute, WV plant. This is the only place in the US where MIC gas is manufactured. MIC is well known for killing thousands in Bhopal, India. It is considered a no-no to overfly the plant. A little farther down the river you will see St.Albans on the south side... boyhood home of Yours Truly. As you approach St.Albans, be sure to drop down low over the river to observe the river traffic. The next chemical plant you see on the right-hand side of the river will the Monsanto plant located in Nitro, WV. Nitro was built by the Federal Gov't as a location for a large explosives factory during WWI. The war ended just in time for the plant opening. After I-64 passes over the river again you will see the massive John Amos power plant. Fly around the plant and head back for Charleston. When you get back to downtown, turn right and follow route 119 south from the city. Two or three miles out of town you should see a small airport off to the right. This is Mallory Airport. Famous locally for it's... err.. uhhh.. "relaxed atmosphere". The word "ramshackle" describes it pretty well. The landing strip (2000 feet of rough blacktop) is carved into the side of a hill and is so narrow and so hemmed-in you'd think anyone would have to be completely nuts to fly in and out of there. But there are dozens of light planes tied down up there. Test your skill... land there if you dare.
