Conclusion

XamineYourZerver promises to be a valuable tool for learning more about the operation of X11 servers. It certainly makes the process of adding instrumentation and tracing to an X server less ad hoc. The goals of allowing a client-accessible interface, being easy to disable, non-intrusive, non-intensive, and tying together tracing and instrumentation functionality are all met by XYZ.

The XamineYourZerver extension has been implemented and used in conjunction with the development of an X11R4 server for Compaq's prototype MIPS workstation which uses graphics hardware identical to the REX hardware in the Indigo workstation manufactured by Silicon Graphics. The extension has also been ported to the SCO Unix server and the Silicon Graphics IRIX server.
