RE: Fax receive problems in Windows: "Communications Error - 102" RE: Supra ROM upgrade instructions RE: Cooling down your Supra Modem Supra BBS: (503) 967-2444 24 hours Supra Tech Support: (503) 967-2440 M-F 9a-4p PST Fax: (503) 967-2401 24 hours CompuServe: GO SUPRA ********** FAX RECEIVE PROBLEMS WITH SUPRA AND WINFAX ********** After having a problem when trying to receive faxes with my Supra V.32bis Fax/Modem & WinFax Lite, I faxed technical support. The problem involved the carrier being dropped at random times during fax receives. The Delrina WinFax Lite software, which comes bundled with the modem, reported "Communications Error - 102". According to Terri Isom, Supra Technical Support Rep, this is a software message, not a hardware message. This problem can have several causes as follows: Delrina has reported incompatibilities with Norton Desk-Top. Some WinFax users report sparadic performance problems when running Winfax with Norton Desk-Top. If your system is a 386SX or higher, check your WIN.INI file. If you don't have a [368Enh] section, add it to your WIN.INI file and add the lines below. If you do have this section add these lines to it: NOTE: Replace the ~ symbol with the com port number your modem is connected to. (Example: Com2Buffer=1024) ComBoostTime=20 Com~Protocol=XOFF Com~Buffer=1024 Com~AutoAssign=0 I have made these changes but have not yet tried to receive a fax to check out if this fixes the problem. ========== NOTE ABOUT SUPRA ROM UPGRADES ========== If you received and installed a ROM upgrade from Supra, Terri Isom reports that there is an instruction missing from the installation instructions. After the installation is complete and the modem powers up with the OK message, enter your communications program and enter the following: AT&F2&W&W2 NOTE: This will over-write any custom configurations you may have written to the modems non-volitile memory. This resets the new chips to their factory defaults. You only need to issue this command once, as the changes are written to the non-volatile memory. ++++++++++ COOLING DOWN YOUR SUPRA ++++++++++ The following information was *not* supplied by Supra, but was taken from messages in the Hi-Speed Comm area on Exec-PC. Due to the compact size of the Supra, the case and interior of the modem can get very warm. If you place your modem in an area of restricted air flow, you may want to remove the rear black plastic panel to aid in cooling. In addition, with this panel removed you may want to position the modem so the rear of the case is elevated. This will help the heat dissipate through the opening in the rear. For those who experience severe heating problems due to the modems placement, there is a file called SUPRAFAN.ZIP on Exec-PC which shows how to add a cooling fan to the case of your modem. (*Note that the modifications required to add this fan will void your warranty. Also note that this is the design of an individual and is not provided or endorsed by Supra*) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since I am just passing along this information, please contact Terri Isom at Supra Technical Support if you have any questions regarding any of this.
