Main Menu Help 2 of 6 USERDEF templates specify the attributes new users will have. The following explains USERDEF options and preliminary steps. USERDEF options: Add Users Use to create users. Restrict User (v3.x servers only) Restricts disk space at the volume level for existing users. Main Menu Help 4 of 6 Before you run USERDEF, complete these steps: Default template: Install accounting in SYSCON (if you will use it) Create print device definitions for your printers with PRINTDEF; Create print job configurations in PRINTCON so they can be copied for new users.g Main Menu Help 5 of 6 Custom template: Install accounting in SYSCON (if you will use it); Create user groups in SYSCON (if you need groups other than EVERYONE); Create application directories (if you aren't putting program files in SYS:PUBLIC); Main Menu Help 6 of 6 Custom template (continued): Create a parent directory for users' home directories (if you don't want them directly in SYS:); Erase the home directory field to override the default directory path in SYS: (if you don't want users to have a home directory). Exit USERDEF Help 1 of 1 To exit USERDEF, select Yes. To return to USERDEF, press . Load DOS Help 1 of 1 USERDEF tried to find COMMAND.COM in SYS:PUBLIC\%MACHINE\%OS\%OS_VERSION and failed. DOS must find COMMAND.COM after a program is run to return to the command line prompt. Loading DOS on your server also makes all DOS utilities available. Template List Help 1 of 1 These are the defined templates. To view or edit a template, highlight it and press . To delete a template, highlight it and press . To delete several templates, mark each using Mark ; then press . To add a template, press ; then enter a template name. Copy DOS Help 1 of 1 Load the DOS STARTUP disk. Use the version of DOS that you boot your station with (the DOS you are using). Close the drive door. DOS Template Name Help 1 of 1 Enter a unique filename for the template you want to create. (Use 1 to 8 characters.) If you don't want to create a new template, press . Copy DOS Help 1 of 1 Load the DOS OPERATING disk. Use the version of DOS that you boot your station with (the DOS you are using). Close the drive door. If you load DOS v3.30 from 3.5-inch diskettes, the STARTUP and OPERATING files are on one diskette, so press when prompted to insert the OPERATING diskette. New Users Exist Help 1 of 1 You created users but you told USERDEF not to make them permanent. To make them permanent, return to "Add Users," select the appropriate template, and view old and new users. Then press and answer Yes. If you don't want to make the users permanent, exit USERDEF. Delete Template Help 1 of 1 To delete the current or marked templates, select Yes. To keep the specified templates, press . Long Password Required Help 1 of 1 This user's password is too short. Enter a longer password. USERDEF repeats the original password until you make the password long enough. Since USERDEF is generating users, you must enter a valid password now. You can't stop the new user generation. MAKEUSER Results Help 1 of 2 These are the results of new user creation. Possible messages: "User created" A user was successfully created. "User not created" A user was not created. The reason is listed on the line above this message. MAKEUSER Results Help 2 of 2 Possible messages (continued): "Error mallocing" or "Insufficient memory" MAKEUSER ran out of memory and couldn't complete the operation. "Directory already exists" A directory that a user was supposed to use already exists. Template List Help 1 of 1 Select a template to specify the attributes (accounting restrictions, passwords, etc.) new users will have. Note: If you set up a user with one template and set up another user with another template and ask USERDEF to create them, they are both created with the last template used. User List Help 1 of 1 These are existing and new users (users added during this session). New users are marked with a "new" tag. To add users, press and enter the user's name. To delete new users, press . Use SYSCON to delete existing users. To see a user's full name, highlight the user's name and press . Delete Users Help 1 of 1 To delete a user, highlight that user's name (or use Mark to mark several users); then press and select Yes. To keep the user, press . Only users marked with the "new" tag can be deleted. You can't delete existing users in USERDEF; use SYSCON. Full Name Help 1 of 1 This is the full name for the selected user. Full Name Entry Help 1 of 1 Enter the user's full name (first middle last). Don't use a comma in the name. Maximum: 32 characters. USERDEF uses the first name as the user's login name and password, unless you changed the Login Name field. Accounts Already Exist Help 1 of 1 Accounts already exist for people with this name. Suggested Login Name Help 1 of 1 The suggested login name for this new user is the first name of the full name (up to 32 characters). If someone already uses that name, USERDEF adds a number to the name. If you don't like the suggested name, delete it and enter another login name. Add New Users Help 1 of 1 To use the specified template and create users, select Yes. Otherwise press . You can complete other tasks in USERDEF, then add these users before you exit. To create users with a different template, select a template and add users for that template. Edit Template Help 1 of 1 Use this menu to edit the login script and parameters for the template. Parameters are user characteristics (such as accounting and password restrictions, disk limitations, etc.). The parameters and login script are given to each user created with this template. Don't change the drive mappings and COMSPEC command in the basic login script. They give users access to their home directories, DOS directories, and utilities in SYS:PUBLIC. Edit Login Script Help 2 of 2 You can add more drive mappings. The %default_directory in the map command is replaced with the default parent directory specified in the template flags when a user is created. Save Template Help 1 of 1 You must choose to create a new template or to save changes to an existing template. Cannot Delete Default Template Help 1 of 1 The default template cannot be deleted. Cannot Change Default Template Help 1 of 1 The default template cannot be changed. It is stored inside USERDEF. User Groups Help 1 of 1 USERDEF doesn't allow a user to be a member of more than 32 groups.!, User Definition Template Help 1 of 7 The following fields are used when USERDEF creates a user from this template. (You can't change fields on the default template; you can change them on custom templates.) Default Directory Shows the path where the home directory should be created. The directory will have the same name as the user's login name. User Definition Template Help 2 of 7 Copy PrintCon from Press to list users with a PRINTCON database. New USERDEF users can be created with print job definitions from an existing PRINTCON user. Groups Belonged To Press to list groups the user will belong to. To list other groups, press ._/ User Definition Template Help 3 of 7 Account Balance The user's current balance on the server. The balance decreases each time the user is charged for a service. Limit Account Balance Set this to Yes to limit a user's account balance; then specify the user's low limit amount. User Definition Template Help 4 of 7 Low Limit The lowest balance users can have and still receive services that are being charged for. Limit Concurrent Connections Limits the number of stations a user can log in to at the same time. Enter the number in the "Maximum Connections" field.J2 User Definition Template Help 5 of 7 Maximum Connections The maximum number of stations a user can log in from at one time. Require Password Requires users to have a password. If this is set to No, users can still have a password. User Definition Template Help 6 of 7 Minimum Password Length Sets a minimum length for passwords (between 1 and 20 characters). Force Periodic Password Changes Requires users to change their passwords. Days Between Forced Changes The number of days a user can use a password before the password expires. User Definition Template Help 7 of 7 Require Unique Passwords Requires users to choose a different password each time they change it. Limit Disk Space Limits the disk space a user can use. Maximum Disk Space Specifies the maximum amount of disk space the user can use. Default Directory Help 1 of 2 This is the path where a user's home or work directory is created. The path is an existing volume path or an existing volume and directory path. Don't include the user's home directory name with the path. If you don't want home directories created automatically, leave this option blank. Default Directory Help 2 of 2 Unless you change this parameter, users' home directories are created as directories in volume SYS. The home directory has the same name as the user's login name. If the login name is longer than 8 characters, the home directory name is shortened to 8 characters. PRINTCON Copy Help 1 of 1 This lets you copy print job configurations from other users. Users who have a PRINTCON database are listed. The highlighted user in the "PRINTCON Users" list is the user from which the PRINTCON database will be copied to new users of this type. Select "(None)" if no PRINTCON database should be copied. Groups Belonged To Help 1 of 2 These are the groups this user will belong to. (Group EVERYONE is always listed unless it has been deleted from the file server.) USERDEF can create the user as a member of up to six groups. To see defined groups that this type of user doesn't belong to, press . Groups Belonged To Help 2 of 2 To add a group to the "Groups Belonged To" list, highlight it on the "Groups Not Belonged To" list; then press . To delete a group from the "Groups Belonged To" list, highlight it; then press . Account Balance Help 1 of 1 Type the account balance limit for this user and press . To cancel changes, press Cancel . The balance decreases each time the user is charged for a service. Only the supervisor can increase a user's account. "Account Balance" cannot be less than "Low Limit." Default: 1000 chargesh@ Limit Account Balance Help 1 of 2 To set a low account balance limit for this type of user, select Yes. Default: No. To cancel changes, press Cancel . "Account Balance" cannot be less than "Low Limit." If you select Yes, users can operate their accounts on credit after the account balance is depleted. Limit Account Balance Help 2 of 2 If you select No, users can operate their accounts only until the account balance is depleted. Low Limit Help 1 of 3 This specifies how low the account balance can go. Enter the Low Limit amount for the account balance. Default: 0 To cancel changes, press Cancel . "Account Balance" cannot be less than "Low Limit." %D Low Limit Help 2 of 3 "Low Limit" is the lowest balance that this type of user can have and still receive services that are charged for. Enter a positive number to indicate that a user must have a balance. Example: 10 indicates that when a user account drops to 10, the user can't receive services. Low Limit Help 3 of 3 Enter a negative number to indicate a user can still receive services after the account balance falls below zero. Example: -20 indicates the user can receive services for 20 charges after the account balance reaches zero. Limit Concurrent Connections Help 1 of 1 To limit the number of stations that this type of user can log in to at one time, select Yes and press . Default: No To cancel changes, press Cancel . If "Limit Concurrent Connections" is set to Yes, you can enter a value in the "Maximum Connections" field. Maximum Connections Help 1 of 1 Enter the maximum number of stations users can log in from at the same time. Maximum: 8. To cancel changes, press Cancel . Required Password Help 1 of 2 If you don't want to require users to have a password, select No and press . Default: Yes. If a password is required and the user doesn't have a password of the minimum required length, the user is told that the password has expired. To cancel changes, press Cancel . Required Password Help 2 of 2 After a user's password expires, the user is given a specified number of grace logins. Default: 7. When the user logs in, the user is told that the password has expired and is prompted to change it. If the password isn't changed before grace logins are used up, the user can't log in. Minimum Password Length Help 1 of 1 Enter the minimum required password length that users can have. Default: 5 characters. To cancel changes, press Cancel . If a user doesn't have a password of the minimum required length, the user is told that the password has expired. Force Periodic Password Changes Help 1 of 1 If you don't want users to change passwords at regular intervals, select No and press . Default: Yes To cancel changes, press Cancel . If this option is set to Yes, you can set the number of days after which the user password expires. Enter that number in the "Days Between Forced Changes" field. Days Between Forced Changes Help 1 of 1 Type the number of days that users can use the same password, then press . Default: 90 When the user logs in after the specified number of days, the user is informed that the password has expired. To cancel changes, press Cancel . Require Unique Passwords Help 1 of 1 If you don't want to require users to use a new password when the password is changed, select No and press . Default: Yes. The file server remembers the user's previous passwords. To cancel changes, press Cancel . Limit Disk Space Help 1 of 1 To limit the amount of disk space that users can have, select Yes. Default: No. To cancel changes, press Cancel . If this option is set to Yes, you can specify a value in the "Maximum Disk Space" field. Maximum Disk Space Help 1 of 1 Enter the maximum amount of disk space users can have on the file server. To cancel changes, press Cancel . Enter the amount of disk space in kilobytes (1KB or 1024 bytes). Disk space is allocated in 4KB blocks. Users on Server Help 1 of 1 This lists your name and the names of users you manage. To assign volume space restrictions to a user, highlight the user name and press . If the user you want to view or limit is not defined, return to the main menu and add the user to the server. Volumes on Server Help 1 of 1 These volumes are defined on the server. To limit a volume, highlight the volume name and press . Otherwise, press . Limit Space Help 1 of 1 This field determines whether there will be a space restriction for the user on the selected volume. To place a restriction on the users, press Y for Yes. Then go to the "Available" field and enter the restriction. To remove restrictions, press N for No. Available Help 1 of 1 This is the space limitation (in kilobytes) for the user on the selected volume. Type the space restriction you want; then press .\Z User Disk Space Limitation Help 1 of 2 This lets you limit the amount of space users can use on the selected volume. To restrict space, set "Limit Space" to Yes and enter the limitation in the "Available" field. To remove users' space restriction, set "Limit Space" to No. User Disk Space Limitation Help 2 of 2 Fields: User. The user's name. Volume. The volume name. Limit Space. Shows if the user has a disk space limit. Available. The user's space restriction. In Use. The amount of space in use by the user. View Login Script Help 1 of 1 This is the login script for the default template and can't be edited. This login script is given to new users created with this template. The %default_directory in the map command is replaced with the default parent directory specified in the template flags. View Template Help 1 of 1 This shows the parameters and login script for the template. Parameters are characteristics (accounting restrictions, password restrictions, disk limitations, etc.). The parameters and login script are given to each user created with this template. You cannot edit the Default Template login script or parameters from this screen. Limit Space Help 1 of 1 This field determines whether there will be a space restriction for the user on the selected server. To place a restriction on the users, press Y for Yes. Then go to the "Available" field and enter the restriction. To remove restrictions, press N for No. User Disk Space Limitation Help 1 of 2 This lets you limit the amount of space users can use on the server. To restrict usage, set "Limit Space" to Yes and enter the limitation in the "Available" field. To remove a space restriction, set "Limit Space" to No. User Disk Space Limitation Help 2 of 2 Fields: User. The user's name. Restrictions enforced. Shows if this server is enforcing disk restrictions (Limit Space and Available). Users on Server Help 1 of 1 This lists your name and the names of users you manage. To view disk space restrictions for a user; highlight the user name and press . If the user you want to view or limit is not defined, return to the main menu and add the user to the server. Available Help 1 of 1 This is the space limitation (in kilobytes) for the user on the selected server. Type the space restriction you want; then press .
