Moika Embankment, 103 1766-80. Architects S. Chevakinsky and J.-B. Vallin de la Mothe The erection of the ensemble is due to the development of Petersburg as a shipbuilding center on the Baltic Sea. The small island that was long back, in Peter's times, called New Holland, was formed after the Admiralteisky and Kriukov Canals had been dug. In 1732-40 the first wooden warehouses for storing timber for shipbuilding purposes were built here (architect I. Korobov). In 1765 Chevakinsky developed a new version of warehouses that was actually implemented. The façades and the monumental arch over the canal leading into the island's interior were designed by Vallin de la Mothe.
