An important factor in their triumph was Pittsburgh's pitching ace Doug Drabek's decision to try for third with a meaningless run in the first game. The Pirates had a 4-0 lead when Drabek tried to stretch a double into a triple and pulled a muscle instead. The Braves came back to win Game 2 as David Justice scored the only run on Mark Lemke's bad-hop double. The third game was a rout for Atlanta, but the Pirates came back to take the dramatic fourth-game in ten innings. A pinch-hit single by Mike LaValliere plated Andy Van Slyke with the game-winner. It was then Pittsburgh's turn win a 1-0 thriller. David Justice missed third base in the fourth, cancelling a run for the Braves. Light-hitting Jose Lind drove in Steve Buechele with the only tally in the fifth. But this was to be the last score for Pittsburgh, as the Braves shut them out in games six and seven. Greg Olson got the game-winning hit for Braves in the ninth off Drabek, who gamely came back after his injury. The run was scored by Ron Gant, who had stolen second after singling. This was the third 1-0 game in the series. The Braves got off to a quick start in the final game, with three in the first led by Brian Hunter's two-run homer. They coasted to a 4-0 win. The Braves pitchers allowed only 12 runs in seven games, 11 earned. Steve Avery and John Smoltz each won a pair of games and Tom Glavine pitched well in defeat. Alejandro Pena relieved in four games and saved three, as the team ran up a 1.57 earned run average. in five games, as Jack Morris won two games for the Twins. Minnesota built up a 5-0 lead in the first three innings of the first game and held on to 5-4 win. A fine defensive play by Terry Harper cut off a Blue Jay run in the fourth. Harper took Greg Gagne's relay from Kirby Puckett to nip Roberto Alomar at the plate. Then the Twins finally lost at home after seven straight victories dating back to 1987, as Toronto took Game 2 by a 5-2 score. Kelly Gruber had the key hit, a two-run single in the third, while Juan Guzman, Tom Henke and Duane Ward shut down the Twins. Minnesota roared back with three wins in a row, all on the road, giving the Twins a rest while Atlanta and Pittsburgh battled to seven games in the National League. The third game was a 3-2 win in ten innings. Mike Pagliarulo stroked a game winning homer. The next game went to the Twins easily by 9 to 3. A four-run uprising in the fourth put the game away. It was ignited by a Puckett homer, a single by Pagliarulo and a two-run one-baser by Dan Gladden. Morris got an easy victory. Game five was decided by a three-run rally by the Twins in eighth. Puckett and Kent Hrbek drove in the deciding runs. Minnesota had previously rallied for three in the sixth to cancel out a 5-2 Blue Jay lead. Chuck Knoblauch's two-run double was the telling blow. Puckett led Minnesota at bat with two homers, six runs batted in and a .429 average. Rick Aguilera saved three times for the Twins in as many games. The Twin relievers allowed only two unearned runs in 18 and one-third innings. Toronto's Roberto Alomar led all batters with a .474 mark. Both teams had finished last in their divisions in 1990. Five games were decided by one run including three in extra innings, and the final game went to the Twins by a 1-0 score in ten. The AL West, after many years of mediocrity, has now been in six of the last seven series, winning four. Minnesota continued their dominance in their home Metrodome, winning all four games. Free agent pitcher Jack Morris, signed by the Twins for one year only with some criticism, was the star of the series. Jack won two games, allowing only three runs in 23 innings. He saved his best for last, shutting out the Braves in a while pitching all ten innings in the seventh game. The Twins swept the first two games in Minnesota. They were well-rested, while the Braves had a seven-game struggle with Pittsburgh which allowed them only one day off. Greg Gagne was the star of the initial contest, slugging a three-run homer off hard-luck Charlie Leibrandt in the fifth inning, giving Morris a 5-2 win. The Braves got a tough break in the second game when Ron Gant was called out when he was lifted off first base by Kent Hrbek while returning after a hit. Scott Leius hit a game-winning homer in the bottom of the eighth of Cy Young winner Tom Glavine, who pitched gallantly in defeat. Unheralded Mark Lemke, who topped all batters for the series with a .417 mark, led the Braves to three triumphs in Atlanta. He drove in the winning run in the twelfth in Game 3 and tripled and scored the game-winner on an acrobatic scramble in the ninth of Game 4. The fifth game was a 14-5 blowout for Atlanta. Lonnie Smith hit his third homer in as many games and David Justice drove in five to lead the Braves attack, while Lemke added a pair of triples and three ribbies. Kirby Puckett was a one-man show in the sixth game, scoring two runs and driving in three. He hit a tenth inning homer to win the game off Leibrandt. Morris and John Smoltz pitched brilliantly in the final game. Lonnie Smith lost Terry Pendleton's eighth-inning double in the crowd and failed to score a run which would have given the Braves a 1-0 victory. After Morris pitched out of that jam, tenth-inning pinch-hitter Gene Larkin drove in Dan Gladden with the series clincher.
