East India companies control most Asian trade Portugal, which once dominated most European trade with India and the East Indies, has been displaced by England and the Netherlands. English and Dutch East India companies formed in the early 1600's have seized many Portuguese holdings and have driven most Portuguese traders out of India. The struggle for control of trade in India now pits the Dutch against the English.
