Degree programs and employment prospects |
The University of Paris offers degrees in the arts and in theology, as well as professional degrees in medicine and law.
As a bachelor of arts candidate, you will study the trivium and quadrivium and participate in disputations. Those wishing to earn a master of arts degree will continue for an additional five or six years. Those with a master of arts degree may choose to pursue a degree in medicine, law, or theology. Only the most dedicated scholars pursue a degree in theology, the "queen of the sciences." A doctorate in theology requires an additional 13 years of study.
Those with training in the arts may find employment in the household of a king or great lord. Employment prospects for educated clergy are rosy at present. Students willing to become priests may secure a position in a parish or cathedral. Holders of a master of arts degree may teach, lecture, and accept students. Masters in law or medicine also may become well-paid lawyers or physicians, or may teach. Masters in theology who become priests may hope for advancement within the Church, perhaps becoming bishops or even pope. |
