Ghiribizzo's Gizmos

In this section I'll talk about some of the toys I've accumulated over the years - a sort of hardware sub-page. I'm not sure how long this section will last as it has lots of gfx which eat up the limited space available.

Olympus C-1400L Digital Camera

I might as well start off with this little toy as the pictures shown here have been taken with it. Although pretty impressive when I bought the camera, the specs look a little dated now with the new double megapixel cameras. However, this is a great camera that has won many awards. It's an SLR making it more of a 'proper' camera. The package came with all the usual stuff, 4mb SM card, PC cables, drivers, software etc. The 4mb card was a little on the small side, so I bought an 8mb SM card which I find plenty. Now these cameras eat up batteries like nothing on earth so either you're going to spend a LOT of money buying batteries else you're going to be sensible and invest in some NiMH rechargables (NiCads aren't going to cut it). One notable item that was missing from the package was a mains adapter. Since it takes quite a while for batteries to charge up, you don't want to waste them when you're transferring picture from your camera to the PC or when you're using it indoors and an AC line is available. So I phoned up and asked about the mains adapter... $130 for a mains adapter!? Well, there was no way I was prepared to pay so much for a simple mains adapter. I hunted around the house for one and tried it... brief power-up then it died. Probably too noisy. So I grabbed a PC power supply that was lying around, only 5V (1V less than the 6V required) but it should be enough. I flicked the switch... and it powered up nicely. Now since at this point, the camera was connected to the PC power supply by some very dubious bare wires, it was time to build a custom power supply for it supplying the full voltage and with the correct DC connector. I decided to make a power supply and 2 high capacity rechargable battery packs. The power supply would also be the recharger. I will give some pictures here for now and will write more about it later, including a circuit diagram.
