Los adultos de esta especie tienen una mancha negra en forma de triángulo en la punta de las alas. Los inmaduros tienen un collar negro en la parte dorsal del cuello y en vuelo destaca una W formada por una línea oscura en las alas. Anida en grandes colonias en acantilados costeros en Alaska, Canadá, Groenlandia y el ártico de Eurasia. Tamaño: 38-40 cm.; peso: 305-512 g. Audio (M. Oberle). La gaviota más abundante del mundo, pero rara en el Caribe durante el invierno. Existe un avistamiento reciente en Puerto Rico: un adulto descansando con Charranes de Sandwich y Charranes Reales en la bahía de Mayagüez.
