Ave nocturna grande, de plumaje jaspeado de negro y pardo. Especie mayor que el Guabairo. Tamaño: 28-32 cm.; peso: 110 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Anida en los pinares del sureste de América del Norte y las Bahamas. Un visitante invernal raro (y en disminución poblacional) en los pantanos y bosques húmedos de Puerto Rico (por ejemplo, Hatillo, el 15 de enero de 2001 y la Reserva Natural Caño Tiburones, el 23 de febrero de 2002 ). Antes de migrar hacia el norte, puede emitir un "chep--huidó-huidó" en el mes de marzo, canto al cual alude su nombre. TAXONOMÍA: CAPRIMULGIFORMES; CAPRIMULGIDAE; Caprimulginae. También ha sido llamado Guabairo Mayor. |
