Ave nocturna muy grande, de plumaje pardo jaspeado. Se posa en las ramas o los postes en posición vertical, esperando el paso de un insecto para salir volando tras él. Tamaño: 38-44 cm. Peso: 210-251 g. Anida en La Española, Jamaica, Cuba y América Central. Accidental en las islas de Mona y Desecheo (5 de diciembre de 1974 y 24 de octubre de 1987, respectivamente).
