Parecida a la Gaviota Gallega, pero con una banda blanca separando la punta negra del resto del ala dorsal color gris. Los inmaduros tienen una banda negra en la cola excepto en las plumas más externas. Tamaño: 32-38 cm.; peso: 220-335 g. Anida en las praderas del centro de América del Norte y típicamente inverna en la costa del Pacífico de América Central y del Sur.
