A tiny, sparrow-sized, black bird with a red eye. Length: 12-15 cm.; weight: 35 g. This marsh bird bred in Puerto Rico in the recent past, but now only occurs as a rare winter migrant. Destruction of wetlands has eliminated much habitat for this species. TAXONOMY: GRUIFORMES; RALLIDAE References Bent, A.C. 1926. Life histories of North American marsh birds. Smithsonian Instit.
