Lesson 4 Grammar
Back to lesson 4 index

Continuing our lesson on the past tense verbs, let´s learn how to conjugate the er and ir verbs. The nice thing about these verbs in the past tense is that they have the same endings. And they are:

SingularPlural
íimos
iste
ieron

One thing that we didn´t mention in the previous lesson, but that is true for the regular past tense verbs, is that there are accents of the the first person (yo) and the third person (ella, él) endings.

Let´s see an example with the verb comer:

SingularPlural
yo comí (I ate) nosotros comimos (we ate)
tú comiste (you ate)
usted comió (you ate) ustedes comieron (you all ate)
ella comió (she ate) ellas comieron (they ate)
él comió (he ate) ellos comieron (they ate)
Pablo comió (Paul ate) María y Pablo comieron (Mary and Paul ate)
Again the nosotros form in the past tense is the same as the nosotros form for present tense ir verbs.

Now let´s see some other examples:

Make a note that when we form questions with the past tense instead of saying do you, we will now be saying did youx, etc. We also remind you that you go to the Verb Forms section of the lesson to see any verb in all its forms. This is helpful because some verbs may be slightly different than the normal rules we talk about here.

In the exercises that follow you will be asked to provide different forms of both er and ir verbs in the past tense.
