============================= Quake II Strategy guide (1.0) ============================= By: Recycle Bin Last update on 13th April, 1998 Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~ First of all, this is not a walkthrough. This is just something short that will teach you more Quake2 playing tactics. Most of this strategy guide I'll focus on multiplayer. In case you didn't notice, I like to type a sentence per line. I think it is easier to read and understand. Let's not waste anymore time, shall we continue? Set Keys ~~~~~~~~ I found the pre-set keys are very dull to use. After some trial and error, I discover some good control keys. First, set "always run" and "free look" to YES. Now this is what I have for the control keys: Function Key -------- --- attack CTRL or MOUSE1 next weapon / walk forward UPARROW or KP_UPARROW(same as KP_8) backpedal DOWNARROW or KP_5 turn left LEFTARROW turn right RIGHTARROW run SHIFT step left , or KP_LEFTARROW(same as KP_4) step right . or KP_RIGHTARROW(same as KP_6) sidestep ALT look up a orPGDN look down z orDEL center view END mouse look \ keyboard look INS up/jump SPACE or KP_ENTER(or better yet, use MOUSE2 or MOUSE3 if you have a three buttons mouse) down/crouch c or MOUSE2(or MOUSE3) inventory TAB use item ENTER or KP_PLUS drop item ' or BACKSPACE prev item [ or KP_HOME(same as KP_7) next item ] or KP_PGUP(same as KP_9) help computer F1 I don't know if there are better keys with joypad cause I don't have one. With these settings, your character will be very agile. You are almost impossible to shoot at. Especially useful in multiplayer. Strategies on Multiplayer Deathmatch ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mainly, there are only two ways to play a deathmatch game. Run around the map and Hide in one place. First, I'll talk about running around. It is easier to use this strategy if you turn your monitor brighter. When you run around the map, it is impossible for any other player to track you. Well, unless you run in pattern(same route). Very important to keep your eye look out for enemies(other players). When you see an enemy, try to see if he/she see you or not. If not, change to your best weapon to kill him/her by suprise. If he/she see you keep step(run) left and right and use your mouse to aim. One more thing to remember, always take cover between firing. Especially when you are using shotgun, rocket launcher(weapons that have slow firing rate). The second method hiding is very simple. You find a dark place and hide in there. Come out and take your enemy by suprise when they pass through. You must not hide in the same place or...HA, HA, HA, HA, HA...you will be blasted by other players. Kill'em as quick as possible or they might hear you. Talking or hearing other player. It is very good to remember the map, if you hear someone when you are close to a deadend. It is most likely that he/she is in the deadend, so you can finish him/her easily. It would be nice if you remember the secret or teleport. For instance, you know there is a secret place underwater and there is a teleport at the secret place that teleport to certain place. You see somebody dive in, instead of chasing him/her down. Why don't you just go to where he/she will come out from the teleport wait for him/her? These are some funny but useless things to do in multiplayer: press h to give someone the finger. press j to taunt. press k to salut. press l to wave, like come over. Weapons ~~~~~~~ Some of the weapons in this game seem quite useless. All of the weapons have almost the same value actually. It is all depends on how you use it. I'll explain every weapons one by one. BLASTER ------- Well, this one is really almost useless. Give little damage but fire rate is not bad. Personally, I use it only when I don't have other weapons. SHOTGUN ------- Repeat shoot and hide. With some aiming practice, it can beat chain gun with this. SUPER SHOTGUN ------------- This baby is going to blew you away. Hide or run around between firing. A blast of shells in close combat can send your enemy to hell. MACHINE GUN ----------- This gun is better in multiplayer game because it doesn't push up. It doesn't eat much ammo and have absolutely no fire delay. CHAIN GUN --------- The chain gun fire massive bullets. So, it use up a lot of ammo. It has long spin up and spin down delay. The least ammo you can fire at a time is 9 bullets. HAND GRENADE ------------ Most people I know think this is useless. Actually, this is a very impressive weapon. Hold the grenade for two seconds(ticks) and let go. The grenade has a little homing system. So, it can turn slightly(automatically) so that it can hit the enemy on the head. GRENADE LAUNCHER ---------------- It shoot faster than you throw(duh?). However, it doesn't have the homing system. It can only shoot straight. What most people don't know is that it actually has a shorter range than hand grenade. ROCKET LAUNCHER --------------- If you like to see flesh and blood flying across the room, this is the weapon to do the job. though it fire a little slow and the rocket travel a little slow but the explosion pack a lot of damage. Just hide behind a box, come out and fire a rocket that will send your enemy flying across the sky. HYPER BLASTER ------------- Tired of using blaster? Get something hyper. With this baby, you can melt an enemy in less than three seconds. It can use up all your cells in less than ten seconds. Unlike chain gun, it has only a short spin up, spin down delay. RAIL GUN -------- Traveling in an incredable speed with a tail behind it. It can blast a hole in your enemy stomach before he/she see you press the trigger. It has a very slow firing rate. BFG10K ------ This is more like some magic to me. Blast a green energy ball through the room. Everything beside it will disappear forever. It use up 50 cells a one time and take about 1.5 seconds to charge. You can do something weird with this gun, just fire and run. You can actually run faster than it. It look like a energy ball is chasing you. CONSOLE ~~~~~~~ Console is a bunch of command that you can't use in the meun. I don't want to type all those command, so I'll just copy someone's and paste it here. I did modify the format a little. Don't ask me anything about the commands, I didn't even read the whole thing. You can't anyway, cause I didn't put my E-mail address on this strategy guide.
