Companions of Xanth DEMO CD-ROM Legend Entertainment Company Version 1.2 DEMO INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION The INSTALL program for this game is in the \XANTH directory on the CD-ROM. It will help you complete either a minimum, or full installation to your hard disk and will help you create the LEGEND.INI file which contains your configuration information. Normally, we recommend that you choose the full installation option which copies everything to your hard disk (except the voice file). This option uses less than 5 Meg. of space on your hard disk. However, if you have a double-speed CD-ROM, DOS 6.2, and you are using SMARTDRV.EXE, you may find that the game will play fast enough with the minimum installation. Make sure you're NOT using the /U option on SMARTDRV, it disables the CD-ROM caching. Although we have included a LEGEND.BAT for users familiar with Legend's previous games, it doesn't do anything special. You can run XANTH.EXE directly without any problem. The game reads the LEGEND.INI file to determine your configuration. However, you can override the LEGEND.INI by specifying parameters on the command line. For example, XANTH QUIET will temporarily disable voice, sound and music. OTHER COOL STUFF Check out the Music/Voice menu option from the system menu by pressing F2 or clicking the disk icon in the lower left corner of the screen. This feature allows you to disable or enable the text and voice. If you have a Sound Blaster or compatible sound card, the game will start with both text and voice turned on. But you may enjoy playing with the text turned off. Since you don't have a manual, you've missed the information about the right mouse button. Normally, pressing the right mouse button will clear the command line. However, you can also program the button to execute a command using a specific verb. To do this, first right-click over one of the default verbs. Then right-click on an object and the verb will act on the object. For example if you right-click on "Open" and then right-click on the door, the door would open. To cancel this feature, right-click on an inactive part of the screen. Keep in mind that this game has on-line help that you can access during game play by pressing "H." We have included several demonstrations to help new game players learn how to use the interface. MISC. TROUBLESHOOTING Before installing or playing this game, please exit Windows. Although we have played Companions of Xanth under Windows 3.1 we REALLY don't recommend it. Windows interferes with interrupts used by the game, and makes it more difficult to maximize available conventional memory. Although the game installation program tries to ensure that you have enough room on your hard disk, each save file takes up about 18,000 bytes. If you tend to save frequently during game play, make sure that you have enough space on your hard drive BEFORE you get stuck half-way through the game unable to save. MEMORY REQUIREMENTS Companions of Xanth has proven to be very durable. It can run in as little as 500,000 bytes of memory, but we don't recommend it! As available memory diminishes, features like music, undo and animation disappear. We recommend a configuration with at least 600,000 bytes of conventional memory to assure that you see and hear everything in the game.
