INTRODUCTION ============================================================================ Revenge of Mozilla II (ROM2) is a utility that removes Internet Explorer from the Windows 98 operating system as well as every other 'Microsoft Internet' component beyond TCP/IP and DUN. In addition, ROM2 also replaces the standard Windows 98 explorer shell with the Windows 95 OSR2 version. The following items are removed from Windows 98 by Revenge of Mozilla II: 1. Internet Explorer 2. Outlook Express 3. Microsoft NetMeeting 4. Microsoft NetShow 5. Microsoft Chat 6. Internet Connection Wizard 7. HTML Help 8. ActiveMovie 9. Online Services 10. Task Sheduler 11. Dr. Watson 12. FrontPage Express 13. Windows Scripting Host 14. Outlook Stationary 15. Web Publishing Wizard 16. IE Channels 17. ActiveDesktop Items 18. HTML Help Data 19. Win98 Welcome Applet 20. Web Based Enterprise Management 21. Bitmap Tiles 22. Readme (text) Files 23. Other miscellaneous items 24. Massive cleaning of the system registry 2. WHAT'S NEW? ============================================================================ The first version of Revenge of Mozilla only worked on a 98Lite installation of Windows 98. Such is not the case with ROM2 as it will perform all of the necessary work itself, including both the Win95/98 shell replacement and the various binary/registry patches that are necessary to restore 100% functionality. 3. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ============================================================================ All you need to use Revenge of Mozilla II is the following: 1. Windows 98 2. The Windows 95 OSR 2.0/2.1 versions of: A) Explorer.exe B) Comdlg32.dll C) Shell32.dll 3. Revenge of Mozilla II (obviously) :) 4. INSTALLATION ============================================================================ Revenge of Mozilla II is designed to be used immediately after a Windows 98 installation and, as such, has only been tested that way. In saying that, the installation is quite easy. Just follow these steps: A) Install Windows 98 B) Run the ROM2.EXE file to extract ROM2. The default extraction directory is C:\ROM2. C) Be sure to have the required Win95 files (explorer.exe, comdlg32.dll, shell32.dll) handy. Be it on the Win95 CD, your hard drive, or a floppy disk. D) Run REVENGE.EXE from the directory where you extracted ROM2. (*** DO NOT RUN ANY OF THE OTHER EXE'S WITHIN THE ROM2 FOLDER ***) E) After clicking the 'Execute' button from the main screen follow the any directions prompted to you. When asked to reboot ALWAYS choose YES. Typically you'll have ended up rebooting twice when all is said and done: Once for the shell replacement and once for the deletion of files currently in use. F) That's it! Enjoy your new lean and mean Windows98. 5. KNOWN ISSUES ============================================================================ After rigorous testing and feedback, I'm happy to report that there are currently no known issues with Revenge of Mozilla II... except, of course, applications that require Internet Explorer not being able to run! :) One point of interest, however, is to avoid running any 'registry cleaning' tool until you have installed, and made default, your browser of choice. After ROM2 is applied there is no browser on the system and some registry cleaners, in particularly Microsoft RegClean, will remove settings from the registry that will prevent the web browser, i.e. Netscape, from being the default 'http', etc... handler. In the event that you encounter a problem/omission/etc..., please contact me at jensenba@silverlink.net. I will check it out and, if verified, I'll apply the neccessary changes/additions to ROM2 as soon as possible. 6. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ============================================================================ 1. Can I install Internet Explorer after using Revenge of Mozilla II? Absolutely! I run Internet Explorer 5.0 on one of my ROM2 setups myself and it runs great. 2. I'm a web developer and would like to be able to test my web pages with Internet Explorer 3.02. Is it possible to install IE 3.02 on a ROM2 setup? Yes. IE 3.02 has been installed and tested under ROM2 installations and functions without a hitch. Just be sure, during the IE 3.02 install, that you ALWAYS choose to KEEP any existing file that IE 3.02 wants to overwrite, i.e. url.dll. 3. How do I get updates for my system now that the IE based WindowsUpdate is no longer available? Microsoft has posted a non-IE dependent web site for you to retrieve your Windows 98 updates from using any browser. The web address for this update site is: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp You will find that since IE is no longer present on your system that you only actually need a fraction of the updates since Windows 98 was released. Basically Y2K updates, DirectX, MS Libraries update, possibly Windows Media Player. 4. What kind of machines has Revenge of Mozilla II been tested on? ROM2 has been tested on systems ranging from a 486DX2-66 w/16MB RAM, 512MB HD, Stealth24 Video to a PII-400 w/128MB RAM, 10GB HD, 16MB NVidia TNT. 5. Is Revenge of Mozilla II shareware? How much does it cost? ROM2 is entirely freeware and doesn't cost a single cent! :) 7. AUTHORS NOTES ============================================================================ Although Revenge of Mozilla II runs great, works great, and accomplishes the job it set out to do: It is my suggestion that ROM2 only be used by intermediate to advanced users that have a good understanding of their systems and how things work. In saying that, I hope you enjoy ROM2 and achieve the satisfaction that I have from it. Any comments, suggestions, ideas, etc... are more than welcome and I'd love to hear them.
