POINTS OF INTEREST Site of the Continental Army's Winter encampment, 1777-78, the Park contains General Washington's headquarters, original earthworks, a variety of Monuments, re-creations of log buildings, and cannon. The Park is on the Schuylkill River where Washington's Continental Army had to endure several months of suffering. Washington led his troops to Valley Forge after defeats at Brandywine and Germantown. These defeats left Philadelphia under British control. The soldiers had little food, and too little clothing to protect themselves from the cold. The Winter tested the loyalty of the troops, and only dedicated patriots stayed with the Continental Army.
