The French Quarter Visitor and Folklife Center is in the French Market on Decatur Street. To reach the Chalmette Unit, go east on N. Rampart Street until it merges with St. Claude Avenue, continue until it merges with the St. Bernard Highway (LA 46). The Barataria Unit is located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. Go across the Crescent City Connection, then continue on 90 to Barataria Blvd., turn south on 45 and continue seven-and-one-half miles. The Acadian Cultural Center is in Lafayette. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Peak visitor month is March. POINTS OF INTEREST The Park consists of Barataria, Chalmette, the French Quarter, and the Acadia units. The Acadian Cultural Center at Lafayette interprets Cajun culture and history. Barataria, south of New Orleans, has trails and canoe tours through bottomland hardwood forests, swamp, and marsh. Chalmette, east of New Orleans, was the scene of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans. The French Quarter unit interprets the ethnic population of the Delta. Several cultural centers maintain ties to distinctive, long-established groups with ethnic identities and operate in the Park through cooperative agreements.
