Go east from Duluth on Highway US 2. Bayfield Park Headquarters and Visitor Center is on Highway WI 13. Access to the islands is by boat, commercial and charter boats. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Visitor attractions are closed during Winter. Peak visitor month is August. Winters are cold with lots of snow, Summers are warm with cool nights. Climate: Winter, -4 to 18 degrees F; Summer, 70 to 85 degrees F. POINTS OF INTEREST Twenty-one picturesque islands and an 11-mile strip of adjacent Bayfield Peninsula along the south shore of Lake Superior comprise this Park. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours/trails; picnic areas; campgrounds; group campsites; backcountry use; hiking; swimming; boating; fishing; hunting. GENERAL INFORMATION Visitor activities include interpretive exhibits and audiovisual programs, evening programs, and nature walks at various locations. Tours of lighthouse and historic commercial fisheries are available during the Summer. Campgrounds are in numerous areas, and concessioners provide excursions and shuttle between islands. Chartered fishing trips are also available. Food and supplies are obtainable in Bayfield, Cornucopia, Ashland, Washburn, and Madeline Island. Overnight accommodations are available in Bayfield, Washburn, Ashland, Cornucopia, and the nearby Chequamegon National Forest. Nearby are the Red Cliff Indian Reservation, Madeline Island and Museum, and Big Bay State Park.
