The Monument is forty-five miles north of Scotts Bluff (Highway 26-Oregon Trail). Go thirty-four miles north from Mitchell on NE 29 and three miles east on County Road. Go twenty-two miles south from Harrison on NE 29 and three miles east on County Road. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Visitor Center open weekends only, November to April. Peak visitor month is July. Climate: January, 10 to 40 degrees F; July, 75 to 92 degrees F. POINTS OF INTEREST These renowned quarries contain numerous, well preserved Miocene mammal fossils and represent an important chapter in the evolution of mammals. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; self-guiding tours/trails; picnic areas; hiking; fishing. GENERAL INFORMATION A one-mile paved trail leads to the fossil beds, and one-half mile grass trail leads to the Daimonelix Fossil burrows area. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Harrison (twenty-five miles) and Scottsbluff (forty-five miles). Chimney Rock National Historic Site is near Scotts Bluff on the Oregon Trail (Highway 26). Beware of rattlesnakes.
