Take I-25 south from Albuquerque to Belen, then drive east twenty-one miles on US 60 to Mountainair. For the scenic route, take I-40 east from Albuquerque to NM 337, then turn south and drive fifty-four miles to Mountainair. The Gran Quivira Unit is twenty-six miles south from Mountainair on NM 55; the Quarai Unit is eight miles north on NM 55; Abo' is nine miles west of the Salinas headquarters on US 60. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Peak visitor month is July. Summer temperatures are 80 to 90 degrees F. Winter temperatures are 30 to 50 degrees F. POINTS OF INTEREST This Park preserves and interprets the best remaining examples of 17th-century Spanish Franciscan mission churches and conventos remaining in the United States. The Park preserves four of the six surviving 17th-century mission churches; and three of the largest Pueblo Indian villages, which represent cultural traditions extending at least 7,000 years into the past, including the division between Anasazi and Mogollon culture areas. The Salinas sites have been abandoned since the 1670s. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours/trails; picnic areas.
