The entrances at Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms are approached from the west via I-10 (Highway 60) and Twentynine Palms Highway 62. The south entrance at Cottonwood Spring is twenty-five miles east of Indio. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Peak visitor month is April. Climate: January, 32 to 64 degrees F; July, 76 to 104 degrees F. Average annual precipitation, 0 - 8 inches. Cool in Winter, hot in Summer. POINTS OF INTEREST A representative stand of Joshua trees and a great variety of plants and animals exist in this desert region. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours/trails; campgrounds; group campsites; backcountry use; hiking; mountain climbing; horseback riding GENERAL INFORMATION Drink lots of water, stay away from mine shafts, and watch out for rattlesnakes. Campers must bring their own water and firewood. Cottonwood and Black Rock Campgrounds, Cap Rock Nature Trail and Twentynine Palms Oasis Nature Trail are handicap accessible. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree, and Yucca Valley.
