Der Originalname war "Violoncello", aber es wird gewöhnlich nur Cello genannt.

Das Cello ist wesentlich größer als die Viola und die Saiten sind eine Oktave und eine Quarte tiefer gestimmt als die der Violine: C - G - d - a. Der Cellist sitzt und hält das Instrument zwischen seinen Knien.

In einem Streichquartett ist das Cello das Baßinstrument.
