@Glossary@1 @Tonic:@2 A "tonic" is the first and main note of any key. The triad, which is built on the tonic, is the chord toward which the majority of other chords usually move, to give the feeling of resolution or end. In harmony, a special name is given to each degree of the scale when it is used as the root of a chord. The names are as follows: I-Tonic, II-Supertonic, III-Mediant, IV-Subdominant, V-Dominant, VI-Submediant, VII-Subtonic or Leading tone. _______________________________________________________________________________ The Musical Instruments of the Symphonic Orchestra Copyright ©1993-1994 by Plastronics Ltd. and InterActive Publishing Corporation
