@Glossary@1 @Score:@2 The "score" is the notation in which all the parts of a musical composition are written, one below another on different staffs. It is usually used by the conductor, with every member of the orchestra playing from the notes which apply to his part only. The different instruments have a traditional place in the score, which helps the conductor to grasp the score as fast as possible. Following is the traditional order of the instruments, from the top of the page downwards. Woodwinds: Piccolo Flute Oboe English Horn Clarinet Bass Clarinet Bassoon Contra-Bassoon Brass: French Horn Trumpet Trombone Tuba Percussion: Timpani Other Percussion Instruments Piano or Harp Soloists (Vocal and/or Instrumental) Strings: 1st Violins 2nd Violins Viola Cello Double Bass _______________________________________________________________________________ The Musical Instruments of the Symphonic Orchestra Copyright ©1993-1994 by Plastronics Ltd. and InterActive Publishing Corporation
