[HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: £1.30 [BULL] Glass of wine: £1.40[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] In addition to the 4-screen Odeon in Middlesbrough and the arts cinema in Stockton, there's now Teesside Park, a new development of shops, including a drive-in McDonalds and a 14-screen cinema.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] (2) From panto to rep and back to panto.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Over the road from the SU, The Star and Garter and the Southfield (a bit duller) are popular with students. Other [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: the Dickens; Malt Shovel. Consult the Union Handbook, some pubs are definitely to be avoided.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] [ITAL]It would be unfair to say that all of Middlesbrough's large selection of clubs are tacky, but we haven't yet found one that isn't. Among the best are The Arena, Madisons, Blaises, State 52 (gay, strippers) and Centrefold, but only really on student nights.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] The Town Hall stages everything from popular to classical, country to more country. [ITAL]The Arena is more Radio 1 (M-People, Paul Oakenfold, Boy George), and the Empire, an old ballroom, recently had Edwin (War!) Starr.[EITAL][HDNG]UNIVERSITY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E1[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: 99p [BULL] Glass of wine: £1.10[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Bars:[EBOLD] (4) The SU runs 2 bars at the main site: the unnamed Upstairs area (cap 650, late licence); the Buskers Bar (550, late licence). The [ITAL]friendly [EITAL]Pouches Bar (100) is at Linthorpe Halls and the Flatts Lane bar serves the cheapest tipple in town.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos and music venues:[EBOLD] 'Upstairs at the Union' hosts 4 nights a week (adm £1.50) and [ITAL]attracts some big chart bands, but not consistently.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Recent band appearances:[EBOLD] Suede, Oui3, Kingmaker, Sunscreem, Carter USM, Oceanic.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] Every Sunday in the Buskers Bar the chuckle mongers goad the giggles. Recently, Jack Dee, Jo Brand, Lee Evans.[PARA][BOLD]Others:[EBOLD] Various balls and the Athletics Union Dinner ([ITAL]a chance for sporties to wear something other than a tracksuit[EITAL]).[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]The University makes good with the munchies from 12-7, and the Buskers Bar does pizzas. On the teas side around Teesside, the choice of other eats is suprisingly good: 2 quite scoffworthy value veggies, lots of Italian and Indian restaurants all at quite reasonable prices, and plenty of cheap and cheerful cafes. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Savini's (run by a mad Italian); Peking Villa (best Chinese); The Waffle Iron. Roy's Coffee Shop is an institution, and Roy is an honorary life member of the SU, immortalised on T-shirts[EITAL]. [ITAL]Try his jam roly-poly and die happy.[EITAL][PARA][PARA]
