Subject: [script] Kimi Shika Iranai Side Story, vol.1, ch.1 Hello, all! Well, I spotted (and picked up) Kimi Shika Iranai Side Story last week at the local Kinokuniya... and since I've already been seeing some confusion in parts of the Net about certain aspects of the story (mostly about who the "other girl" is), I thought I'd do a translation of the first chapter in order to help clear things up. Yes, I know a summary would've been easier, but I rather liked this story, so... =) For those of you unfamiliar with KSI-SS, it's sort of a sequel to KSI (the KSI-SS story finishes up in only one volume, btw!), but since the POV character is different (Kimika yay!), I guess Yoshizumi (or her editor) decided to call it "Side Story". Of course, since it's Kimika who's the main character in Side Story, I would have been tempted to call the story "Kimika Shika Iranai" ("All I Need Is Kimika", as opposed to "All I Need Is You"), but... =) Anyway, the story takes place sometime after the main KSI story wraps up, so for those of you who haven't read both volumes of Kimi Shika Iranai, do note that there are some potential spoilers in KSI-SS... As always, any comments, complaints, commendations, criticisms, or questions both are welcome and can be directed to me at the address below.* Other than that, hope you enjoy the script! * note: in order to fool spambots, all e's have been removed from the e-mail address listed below... (p.3) (dance club, Kimika dancing) Kimika (narration): It all started that night... Kimika (narration): The night I saw Kazumi out with another girl... (p.4-5) Title: All I Need Is You Side Story (p.6 - filler picture: Kimika) (p.7) (night) (Kimika leaves the dance club) (she stretches a bit) Kimika: Whew, I haven't danced like that in a while... (p.8) (walking along the street) Kimika (thinking): I think it's good to go out by myself every once in a while. RU: The original "hitori de" could mean either "by myself" or "by oneself", but by the context of the line, I think she's referring to the specific, rather than the general here, so... Kimika (thinking): Kazumi understands... (smile) Kimika (thinking): Or at the very least, he doesn't want to go out dancing with me. (continuing to walk...) Kimika (thinking): Hmm, I'm kinda hungry. I wonder if that cafe I found last week is open this late... Kimika (thinking): Well I suppose I could go and... (something catches Kimika's eye) (p.9) Kimika (thinking): ...find out. (farview: Kazumi and some girl sitting at a table in a coffee shop-type place...) (cut to Kimika) Kimika: Kazumi...? (p.10) (closeup: girl sitting across from Kazumi, laughing, having a good time...) Kimika: Who...? Kimika: Who is that girl...? (scene fade) (morning) (p.11) (school) (Kimika shows up) Kimika: 'Morning... (the gang's all here...) Akane: (slightly concerned) You look tired. Are you all right, Kimika? Kimika: (waving it off) Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Just had some trouble sleeping last night, is all. Kimika: So what are we all talking about? Atsumu: Kazumi's cousin! Did you know Kazumi had a cousin? RU: Atsumu actually refers to Kazumi by his last name, but since in English, one generally refers to one's friends by their first names, this is how I'll be handling such name-related things (inculding things like "sempai") in this translation... Kazumi: (smallprint) I have five cousins, but... Kimika: Cousin? RU: I like this panel, for some reason. The expression on Kimika's face is really cute, imho... ^^ (p.12) Kazumi: My cousin Kaori. She's moving to this area because of her father's job. Kimika: Oh? When are they arriving? Kazumi: Yesterday, actually. I went over to help them move in. Kazumi: It'd been seven years since the last time I saw Kaori... (he smiles a bit) Kazumi: But she used to be my favorite cousin. Atsumu: You said you had a picture of her...? Kazumi: Oh, yes. Right. (he digs around and draws a picture out of his wallet) (p.13) Kazumi: She gave it to me last night. (picture of Kaori) Kimika (thinking): It's the girl I saw Kazumi with... So she's his cousin...! Kimika (thinking, relieved): I guess I got all worried about nothing... Anan: Wow, she's cuute...! Does she have a boyfriend? Ako: Anan!! Anan: (smallprint) Just kidding, just kidding... (p.14) Atsumu: So, when do we get to meet her? Kazumi: They're taking care of the registration details today, so I expect she'll be at school tomorrow. Anan: You mean she'll be going to the same school as us? Cool! Anan: (smallprint) Ow! Kazumi: I'm sure you'll all like her. She's a great person. And I'm sure she'll like all of you, too. Akane: (smile) Well, we look forward to meeting her tomorrow, then. RU: Still not completely happy with this line... (p.15) (Kazumi continues talking...) Kimika (thinking): Wow, I've never seen Kazumi look so excited about anything before... (cut back to Kazumi, who's still talking...) Kimika (thinking): I wonder what sort of person Kaori is...? (later, after school) (p.16) (Kimika and Kazumi) Kimika: What? Kazumi: So I promised Kaori I'd show her around the city today. But I completely forgot about our date tonight. Will you forgive me? (Kimika thinks about it for a moment, then...) Kimika: All right. But you owe me the dessert of my choice next time, okay? Kazumi: Okay, okay! So I'll see you tomorrow, then! (he leaves) Kimika: Tomorrow... (p.17) (the next day) (school) (classroom) Chalkboard: Kaori Kaido:. RU: I'm choosing to denote lengthened vowels by using a ":" immediately following the appropriate vowel, as is generally used in the linguistics field of phonetics to denote vowel lengthening. Although personally, I prefer to use macrons (a "-" over the vowel), as special characters don't transfer very well in ascii, I am using the above notation instead... Anyhow, hope that helps to alleviate any potential confusion... Teacher: As of today, we'll be having a new student in our classroom. Now, it can be tough changing schools in the middle of the year, so everybody please help her out, and welcome her to our class. Kaori: (smile) I'm Kaori Kaido:. I'm pleased to meet you all. (cut to Kimika, curiously scrutinizing Kaori) (closeup: Kaori, smiling in front of the class) (p.18) (later, still in class) (Kazumi is reading something aloud from his class text) Kazumi: "And so another truth we have seen. It is a truth of life, and of death... Perhaps it can be so, yet perhaps cannot. That is what we shall not know. Reality, duality, truth, falsehood. All at once, these things may exist. In knowing this, and only in so knowing, can we truly begin to understand. Looking upon the clues at hand, so shall we know, what we do not know..." RU: Still not sure about some of the stuff in this line, and the next (thanks to Shiori for invaluable help in a couple spots, though!); I assume they're reading some sort of modern poetry or something... (Kimika watching Kazumi read) Kazumi: "Fool that I am, I believed there to be only one truth. Fool that I was, I thought it to be mine. And so I drift already into falsehood. It is but another dream..." (Kaori also watching Kazumi read...) (p.19) (later, after school) Kazumi: And these are Atsumu, Akane, Anan, Ako... and this is Kimika. RU: Shiori's comment upon seeing this line, of course, was: "Wow, everyone's name starts with either an A or a K!"... ^^; Kaori: Ah, so you're Kimika. Kazumi's been telling me a lot about you. (Kimika smiles) Kimika: Good things, I hope. (Kaori smiles as well) Kaori: Of course. (p.20) Atsumu: Hey, we were thinking of getting something to eat, then maybe going bowling... Why don't you come along with us? Anan: Yeah! It'll be fun! (Kaori glances at Kazumi for a moment, then smiles at everyone) Kaori: Sure. Sounds great. (as they start walking...) Akane: (smallprint) So where were you living before you moved here? Kaori: (smallprint) We were in Kobe. Ako: (smallprint) Kobe?? Were you there when...? (scene fade) (fast food restaurant) (p.21) (inside) (everyone seated at two tables...) Atsumu: 240? Really?? Kaori: (slightly embarrassed) Well, I got really lucky that game. And I haven't played in a long time, so I'm sure I'm really rusty. Anan: She goes on the team with fewer people! Akane: But I thought we were gonna do guys versus girls? Anan: Yeah, but she's just way too good! Kimika: But you'd still have Atsumu, right? Anan: Yeah, but... (scene fade) (p.22) (bowling alley) (strike!) Atsumu: Yes! Kimika: Go, Atsumu! Kazumi: All right, you're next, Kaori. Kaori: Right. (Kaori picks up her ball and goes up to the lane...) (p.23) (perfect form, perfect strike) (the crowd is speechless for a moment...) (p.24) Anan: Hey! I thought you said you were out of practice! Kimika: Wow, that was great! Kazumi: Good job. (he smiles) Kazumi: Of course, now I have to follow two strikes... Kaori: Don't worry, you can do it. (Kazumi gets eight) (he frowns a bit, concentrates, then...) (spare) (Kaori consoles him) Kaori: Don't worry, a spare is still good... (later) (p.25) (strike!) Atsumu: Way to go, Kimika! Akane: Wow, your first strike today! Akane: (smallprint) I still don't have one... Kimika: Kazumi! Did you see that?? (Kazumi and Kaori are chatting with each other, and laughing about something...) Kazumi: What? Oh, you got a strike? That's great! (he and Kaori go back to talking with each other...) (p.26) Kimika: ... Anan: (smallprint) Umm, 'scuze me... you're in the way... 'scuze me... (montage of the rest of the game(s) being played out...) (p.27) (they're preparing to leave the bowling alley...) Atsumu: That was a good game. You played pretty well. Kaori: Well, so did you. Though your form is a bit peculiar... Atsumu: (slightly embarrassed) Heh... (Kimika suddenly realizes...) Kimika: Oh, wait. I left my hair clips back at the lanes... RU: btw, is this what you call these things (hair clips)? I asked Shiori, but she wasn't sure what they were called in English, so... Kimika: You guys can go on ahead. I'll meet you outside. Atsumu: Okay. Sure. (p.28) (back at the bowling lanes...) Kimika: Let's see now... Kimika: Ah, there they are! (she picks up the clips, fastens them safely in her hair again, and turns around...) (...to find herself face to face with Kaori) Kimika: Oh, Kaori! Did you forget something too? Kaori: No. I just had something I wanted to say to you. (p.29) Kimika: Yes...? Kaori: I'm not going to lose to you. (blink) Kimika: What? Kaori: Kazumi belongs to me. And I won't let you or anything else come between us. Kimika (thinking, incredulous): Wh-what...?!?
