Although classier by far than hardcore porn, "Red Shoe Diaries" are not up to par with other sensual videos such as "9« Weeks," "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," "Emanuelle," and "An Officer and a Gentleman." What little is left to the imagination here just is not that exciting. However, the atmosphere looms steamy and enticing, as lovers meet in an odd situation obviously not meant to be realistic or even romantic--just straight out of someone's more vivid sexual fantasies. Sexuality aside, although such is the obvious intent of these videos, the actors perform adequately, and King's direction creates just the right setting and mood for a corny yet somehow involving plotline. One barely memorable "diary" involves a lovely woman who uses her job as a police officer to "arrest" the lover of her dreams who fails to notice her by normal means. After long minutes of attempting to arouse him and eventually her goal realized, it seems as though they will actually enjoy a semi-normal relationship. This is accomplished after she handcuffs him, throws him into her police cruiser, and swoops him away to an abandoned theater? No, it is not at all realistic, as I have said before, but to some degree it provides a bit of fun, and we could all use a little bit of that. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "BATMAN RETURNS" * « Definitely the most over-advertised and overrated film of the year, probably of the decade thus far, "Batman Returns" not only does not hold a candle to the original, but has flaws that run much deeper than simply not living up to its hoopla. Keaton, of course, is the nightstalking, scarey-looking, man in black, sporting more neat gizmos and that blank look in his eyes that was romantic in "Batman" but looks more like something you'd see on a drug addict on the street in "Returns." The philosophy here must be that if the glassy-eyed, gloomy loner image worked well for the first one, then by all means make Batman even MORE slack-eyed, dark, and depressing than before. Unfortunately for the movie, it just does not work. The ideas behind Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) and The Penguin (Danny DeVito) are equally ludicrous. Supposedly, Catwoman evolves from a timid, doormat of a woman who suddenly becomes the "bad girl" she had never before allowed herself to be. The Penguin's story makes so little sense that it is impossible to explain; suffice it to say that there is no love lost between him and the half-bat vigilante. The film's fine points focus on the artistic: the costuming, makeup and sets. The spectacular scenerey and eye-popping outfits are a sight, to be sure, but nothing visual can ressurect a sour script and stupid, stupid premise. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP" * * * « This funny film brimming with realistic characters and witty dialogue loses points only in its lengthiness and just one or two too many Harlem Globetrotter-type basketball scenes. Other than that, "White Men Can't Jump" can be chocked up as one of the great movies of the year, even to someone who does not particularly like basketball. Wesley Snipes portrays Sidney, a basketball con artist trying to support his wife and kid playing the courts around California. He meets his match, however, in Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson of TV's "Cheers"), throwing a monkey wrench into his perfect scams. Whether the two are opponents or partners, as they alternate between in this movie, the chemistry is amazing to watch both on and off the basketball court. Billy seems to lose out either way. As a partner, he always manages to lose whatever winnings he accrues on some dumb stunt. As the opponent, he cannot match Sidney in cleverness or ruthlessness. Billy's bungling of money matters has already landed him in big trouble with a gang of hoodlums to the tune of several thousand dollars, and the bums chase him around California wanting their dough. Every time he gets close to having the cash, he blows it foolishly, to the increasing disdain of his beautiful but engagingly neurotic girlfriend, Gloria. Sidney, desperate to move his family out of the ghetto, has no qualms about taking his partner's money. However, he soon finds that Billy is more valuable as a partner than an adversary. "Brothers" bet against him in droves because nobody believes the "white chump" can play basketball. The contrast between the two characters is fascinating. Sidney knows he has a family to support and does not take risks lightly, using his cunning as much as his skill on the court. Billy, on the other hand, could not manage money to save his life (literally), let alone to hang onto his beloved Gloria, frustrated with his irresponsibility. The film contains much strong language and some mild sexual situations, making it unsuitable for the extremely young crowd and those easily offended by the "F" word. But, all in all, "White Men Can't Jump" delivers. ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º F A N T A S T I C C L A S S I C S E C T I O N º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ "POLTERGEIST" * * * « Prefer ghosts to vampires, werewolfs, and mummies? Check out the original "Poltergeist" this Halloween, and prepare to scream in fright. The film focuses on an ordinary family that discovers its house is haunted by a passel of angry poltergeists, the result of their dwelling being built overtop of a graveyard. You see, the greedy developers moved the headstones, but not the coffins. So, the spirits inhabit the closets, even the television set. They hide underneath the beds and attempt to pull unsuspecting sleepers into their clutches. They kidnap the cute-as-a-button youngest daughter of the family, forcing the family to call in the experts in order to flush out the invaders. Although a bit too scarey for extremely young viewers, this movie is rated only PG, and is mild enough for even the most reluctant horror movie viewer and timid audience. Nobody gets hacked to pieces by a demon that refuses to die or anything like that. The scares are creative, the acting performances gripping, the suspense mind-boggling. Although the sequels to this movie are mediocre at best, the original is a classic in its genre, not to be missed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "PSYCHO" * * * * Everyone's heard of it. But have you actually SEEN it? The original? The classic Hitchcock thriller, complete with gripping paranoia and horrifying shower scene? I thought not! Well, do it this Halloween for sure. Anthony Perkins stars as Norman Bates, a nerdy fellow who runs the Bates Motel. Strangely enough, he doesn't just look weird; he IS weird. Keeping your dead mother's corpse upstairs in your creepy home is bad enough, but then pretending to be her when you go out and commit grisley murders is definitely abnormal. A lovely young woman (Janet Leigh), running from the law after stealing $40,000 from her place of employment (back when that was actually a large amount of money), stumbles across the Bates Motel during an awful thunderstorm and gets a room. After a harrowing journey away from home to make a new start with her ill-gotten bootie, the invitation to have dinner with the seemingly kind innkeeper is welcomed. But only this side of his personality is kind. Later, when he becomes his mother, all hell breaks loose, leading to the now infamous shower scene. Don't miss this classic terror treat. Harrowing happenings and eerie performances make this one a hair-raising Halloween rental. Unfortunately, the world recently lost one of its great actors with the death of 60-year-old Anthony Perkins in early September. Although a fine performer with many films to his credit, "Psycho" is likely to be his best-remembered role well into the future. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Children's Pick of the Month: "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" * * * * Okay, "Beauty and the Beast" is the obvious children's pick of the month. But why exclude such a fine film for all ages because of obviousness? The first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award definitely earned its place in history. The Oscars it carried home for Best Original Song and Best Musical Score were also well deserved. The theme song to "Beauty and the Beast," whether performed by pop singers on the radio or by Angela Lansbury in the film, is one of the most lovely pieces to ever come out of a movie, animated or no. The fairy tale is well-known, but even a thousand tellings cannot equal seeing it first hand, the splendid animation, the wonderful voices, the touching emotions depicted so flawlessly (no sign of format limitations). No live actors could more wonderfully depict this story. "Beauty" has spawned a flood of animated major theatrical releases this year, in hopes of transferring the popularity. However, don't be fooled. Just because it is a cartoon doesn't make it a good bet for kids, and very few films of any type are equal to this one. I wish you all a very happy and safe Halloween, and hope families everywhere will realize the importance of appropriate video viewing material for their children. At this time of year in particular, parents should pay attention to the titles their kids want to rent.
