Archives Series
In conjunction with the 1997 Fernand LΘger retrospective, the journal of the MusΘe national d'art moderne has published or reprinted a major portion of the artist's correspondence that has been acquired by the museum's archives. In all, these three volumes, edited by Christian Derouet, present more than 700 letters dealing not only with painting but also with many issues going far beyond the limits of art.

Unpublished correspondence between the artist and his dealer, LΘonce Rosenberg, between 1917 and 1937. These letters, invaluable for establishing a precise LΘger chronology, also refocus the subject of painting on important issues that have been omitted from the history of art.

LΘger's travel notes sent to his friend Simone Herman during his voyages in Europe and the United States from 1931 to 1941 mark a period when he was often cut off from the French artistic scene.

Louis Poughon, a childhood friend of the painter, was a lawyer and later a government official. These eminently literary letters, written during the First World War, can be compared to Henri Barbusse's prize-winning war novel, Le Feu.
